The Inclusive Scouting Award serves a dual purpose. It helps identify scouts and scouters who are “safe” to approach and are supportive of those who are currently threatened with exclusion from Scouting, thereby contributing to a healthier environment for the youth in the program. And it also provides an opportunity for scouts and scouters to exercise some difficult aspects of showing good character and citizenship - all of which is consistent with the best traditions of Scouting.

The Inclusive Scouting Distinguished Service Award. In cases of outstanding public displays of support or advocacy for making Scouting available to everyone regardless of religion or sexual orientation, or in cases where an individual takes a stand on the issue at substantial personal risk (including being kicked out of the BSA), the Inclusive Scouting Distinguished Service Award will be presented. For the Distinguished Service version of the award, the patch designating the award has a gold border instead of khaki.
The very first Distinguished Service Award was presented in person to Dave Rice after a screening of the documentary film Scout’s Honor on May 6, 2002. He received a standing ovation from the audience.
